Laniado Hospital applies advanced methods developed by the IDF.
Giving whole blood to a seriously injured person is one of the main medical tools used by the IDF medical corps on the battlefield during the war.
Laniado Hospital, a self funded regional hospital in Netanya, has decided to implement this method in the operating and trauma rooms.
In view of the success of the IDF Medical Corps in providing whole blood to the wounded in the field, a success that has been proven many times over the past year, Laniado Hospital decided to implement this method in the trauma room and the surgical wards, as well.
Recently, a man in his 70s, suffering from a complex leg fracture, arrived at Laniado Hospital. The patient needed urgent surgery. However, the patient suffered from a lack of platelets and red blood cells, which did not allow the patient to be admitted for surgery. In a quick procedure performed seamlessly by the orthopedic department, the anesthesia department, and the blood bank, the patient received several doses of whole blood. The values in the patient’s blood improved, and he was quickly brought into the operating room.
The same is true in the trauma room: whole blood doses allow the team to save the lives of patients suffering from complex traumas. Recently, a man arrived by ambulance following a work accident, during which he was injured by a disk saw that deeply cut the carotid arteries. The doses of whole blood that were given to him in the trauma room stabilized his condition immediately and allowed for further treatment in the operating room.
Dr. Yohai Raviv, an anesthesiologist in the anesthesia department who managed the complex incident of the orthopedic fracture says: “In the past year, we have heard of many cases of giving whole blood doses in emergency situations to soldiers injured in the battlefield.
Donating whole blood has saved the lives of many brave warriors. In a joint decision of the anesthesia department and the emergency medicine departments, we decided to apply this method also in emergency situations that rarely occur in the hospital. In the above case, giving a dose of whole blood allowed the patient to be admitted to urgent surgery despite the lack of platelets and red blood cells from which he suffered. “
Prof. Zvi Shimoni, the medical director of Laniado Hospital, praised the department staff and said: “Creative thinking is a critical component in saving lives. I congratulate all the teams that were involved in donating whole blood as a tool that saves a limb from amputation. This is an example of thinking outside the box in the trauma and operating rooms, all for the sake of the patient’s health!”
